doo

"link up" is a slang term that means to meet up or hang out.

the inbox is split between linkup requests and regular messaging.

linkup requests expire within 5 hours and is a feature designed to faciliate quick and easy decisions.

users can choose to make their to-do list private or public to their friends. Not everyday needs to be social.

to check off tasks in the to-do list, users upload a photo to show progress.

branding

doo the name sounds like do, which aligns with our mission towards productivity and action. however, has another pronunciation which allows our app to also sound like duo.

Project Overview

Social media has become quite an addiction— the constant stream of information, checking for likes, new posts, comments, and other forms of engagement that appear arbitrarily, encourages users to frequently return to the app. Despite its positive intentions, social media platforms consume a large part of our day— TikTok alone is opened 19 times per day by the average user!

The problem I'm trying to solve:

Social media apps are detrimental to our productivity and mental health. But, they're hard to give up because of its addictive nature and means of social connection. Productivity is also boring— to-do lists and calendars aren't as appealing in comparison to the instant-gratification that TikTok or Instagram provides. (I've opened TikTok at least four times while writing up to this point.)

The Idea

The Planning Process

I wrote down what first came to mind when I thought of productivity and social media:

And then I jotted down popular productivity and social media apps to see if I could find any intersections between them:

Okay but...is there even a demand for this app?

USER RESEARCH

productivity is a social phenomenon

I took it to the internet to see how other people attempted to be productive:

Going shopping, doing work at coffee shops, getting an oil change, running random errands, and studying…despite the arbitrariness of these activities, the common denominator was that they sought a friend to tag along with.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

doo is totally unique...at least for now

I took it to the app store to see if doo would have any competitors:

forest

Focus

Gamifies focus by allowing users to grow virtual trees while staying on task. If the user leaves the app, their tree dies which helps encourage focus. Allows users to compete with friends and users worldwide, making productivity a shared experience.

BeReal

Promotes authenticity by prompting users to post one unfiltered photo per day. Doesn't directly offer productivity features; focuses on fostering real connections and moments and encourage users to engage with their friends in a more authentic and less polished manner.

Liky

Turns focus sessions into a game where users collect flowers in a virtual garden. Users compete with friends or the community,  share their progress, and read inspiring stories. The app also includes a profile page to track focus time and set new productivity goals.

Features

The task was simple: combine the desirable properties of social media and productivity in order to create a mega productive-social app. There were a few things I knew were integral to this new app idea:

  • a to-do list
  • calendar to keep everything organized
  • means to document progress
  • promote interaction between people

I created a MoSCoW chart to prioritize the features that I wanted the app to have.

To create an app that was worthy of returning to frequently without the negative impacts, I wanted a simple user interface.

No dealing with making impressive profiles or garnering massive followers. This app should be used by just a couple of close friends trying to achieve their goals while having fun.
